Why it matters
Every month, Andhra Pradesh appears in national headlines. An ISRO rocket lifts off from Sriharikota. A cyclone crosses the coast. A city of the state is ranked in a national survey. A person from the state gets a national award. The Constable paper picks such items and asks you to recall them.
Plain definition: "Andhra Pradesh in national news" means any event of all-India importance that involves a place, project, person, institution or decision linked to Andhra Pradesh. It is reported by central sources (such as the Press Information Bureau) and not only by local papers.
Where it appears in the paper: The written test has a General Studies part that includes current events of national and international importance. Since the test is conducted by the AP police recruitment board, news that connects national events to Andhra Pradesh is a natural area for questions. These questions are usually short recall MCQs. You either know the answer in a few seconds or you do not, so smart preparation gives you quick, sure marks.
This lesson does not list recent events. Events go stale fast, and wrong dates cost marks. Instead it teaches you what to track, where to read it, how to note it and how to revise it, plus the stable background facts that most AP news connects to.
Core concept
Level 1 (Beginner): What counts as "AP in national news"
Use the mnemonic PRAISE to sort any news item into one of six boxes:
| Letter | Box | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| P | Projects & Polity | Irrigation, ports, airports, industrial corridors, capital development, elections, appointments, Acts |
| R | Rankings & Reports | National indices and surveys where an AP city or the state is ranked |
| A | Awards & Achievers | Padma awards, sports medals, gallantry awards, literary awards to people from AP |
| I | ISRO & Indian Navy | Launches from Sriharikota; exercises and ships at Visakhapatnam |
| S | Schemes | Central schemes launched, piloted or performing well in AP |
| E | Environment & Emergencies | Cyclones, floods, wetlands, wildlife, GI tags, heritage |
If a news item does not fit any box and has no all-India angle, it is probably too local for this paper. Skip it.
Level 2 (Intermediate): Stable background facts that news hangs on
Most AP questions test the news + a static fact. These background facts do not change, so learn them once:
| Place / institution | Why it comes in news | Static fact to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Sriharikota | Satellite launches | Home of ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR); a barrier island between Pulicat Lake and the Bay of Bengal |
| Visakhapatnam | Naval exercises, port, industry | Headquarters of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command; Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL); Hindustan Shipyard |
| Polavaram | Irrigation, funding, rehabilitation | Multipurpose project on the Godavari; declared a national project under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 |
| Tirumala–Tirupati | Pilgrims, temple administration | Sri Venkateswara temple, run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD); Tirupati laddu has a GI tag |
| Amaravati | Capital city development | Named after Amaravathi, an ancient Buddhist centre (stupa) on the Krishna |
| Kolleru Lake | Birds, wetland protection | Freshwater lake between the Godavari and Krishna deltas; a Ramsar wetland |
| Pulicat Lake | Birds, fishing, environment | Brackish-water lagoon shared with Tamil Nadu |
| Coastline | Cyclones, ports, aquaculture | Faces the Bay of Bengal; cyclone warnings come from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) |
Polity numbers (as of 2026): Lok Sabha seats 25, Rajya Sabha seats 11, Legislative Assembly 175 seats; the state has a Legislative Council too.
History anchors: Andhra State (1953) was the first state formed on a linguistic basis. Andhra Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956. Telangana was separated on 2 June 2014 under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
GI-tagged products often in news: Tirupati laddu, Banganapalle mangoes, Araku Valley Arabica coffee, Kondapalli toys, Etikoppaka toys.
Level 3 (Advanced): Who publishes what
A strong answer depends on knowing which body releases which report. Questions often ask, "Which ministry released…?"
| Report / index | Released by |
|---|---|
| Swachh Survekshan (city cleanliness survey) | Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs |
| SDG India Index | NITI Aayog |
| Business Reforms Action Plan (state rankings) | DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry |
| Good Governance Index | Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) |
| Cyclone names and warnings (north Indian Ocean) | IMD assigns names from a list given by member countries of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones |
The tracking method
1. Lookback window: Count back 12 months from your exam date. Give the most recent 6 months the most time, because examiners usually pick fresher items.
2. Reliable sources (in order of trust):
- PIB (pib.gov.in) — official releases of the central government; search "Andhra Pradesh" in releases. PIB also issues releases in regional languages, including Telugu.
- AP government press releases — the state's Information & Public Relations Department and the official AP portal; Government Orders (G.O.s) for final decisions.
- Ministry and agency websites — ISRO for launches, IMD for cyclones, Election Commission for elections.
- DD News / All India Radio (Prasar Bharati) — public broadcaster news.
- Yojana magazine (Publications Division, also printed in Telugu) and the state's annual Socio-Economic Survey for figures.
- One reputed daily newspaper for reading habit, but confirm facts from an official source.
3. Note-making format: Keep one page per month with this table:
| Date | PRAISE box | What happened (one line) | AP link | Static link | Source |
|---|
Write in your own short words. Add the static link every time; that column wins marks.
4. Revision cycle:
- Daily: 15 minutes of reading and 3–5 new lines in your table.
- Weekly: 30 minutes revising the week's lines; make 5 MCQs from them.
- Monthly: shrink the month into 10–15 "must-know" lines.
- Last 3 weeks: revise all 12 monthly pages and take timed current-affairs mocks.
- ✓- Sort every news item with PRAISE: Projects & Polity, Rankings & Reports, Awards & Achievers, ISRO & Indian Navy, Schemes, Environment & Emergencies.
- ✓- Lookback = 12 months before the exam; extra weight on the latest 6 months.
- ✓- Trust order: PIB → AP government releases / G.O.s → ministry and agency sites → DD News / AIR → newspaper (confirm facts).
- ✓- Sriharikota = ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre; Visakhapatnam = Eastern Naval Command HQ.
- ✓- Polavaram is on the Godavari; declared a national project under the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
- ✓- AP (as of 2026): 25 Lok Sabha, 11 Rajya Sabha, 175 Assembly seats.
- ✓- Swachh Survekshan → MoHUA; SDG India Index → NITI Aayog; Business Reforms Action Plan → DPIIT.
- ✓- Telangana formed 2 June 2014; Hyderabad is Telangana's capital, not AP's.
- ✓- Every note = event + AP link + static link + source.
Worked examples
The examples below are practice illustrations, not real news. They show how to turn any headline into exam-ready notes.
Example 1: A space launch
Headline type: "ISRO launches a communication satellite from Sriharikota."
- PRAISE box: I (ISRO).
- AP link: Sriharikota is in Andhra Pradesh.
- Static links: Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR); the island lies between Pulicat Lake and the Bay of Bengal.
- Likely question: "The Satish Dhawan Space Centre, often in the news, is located in which state?" Answer: Andhra Pradesh. A harder version asks for the lake beside it: Pulicat.
Why this works: Even if you forgot the satellite's name, the static link alone answers most versions of the question.
Example 2: A cyclone
Headline type: "A severe cyclonic storm is expected to cross the coast near Machilipatnam."
- PRAISE box: E (Emergencies).
- AP link: Machilipatnam is on the AP coast, Bay of Bengal side.
- Static links: IMD issues warnings and assigns the name; names come from a list contributed by member countries of the WMO/ESCAP Panel.
- Likely question: "Which organisation names cyclones in the north Indian Ocean?" or "The cyclone crossed the coast of which state?"
Note tip: Write the cyclone's name, the coast it crossed and the country that suggested the name. These three are the usual asks.
Example 3: A national ranking
Headline type: "An AP city is among the top cities in Swachh Survekshan."
- PRAISE box: R (Rankings).
- Static link: Swachh Survekshan is conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).
- Note line: City + rank + population category + ministry. Ranks change every edition, so always write "as of
" next to the rank.
Example 4: Building an MCQ yourself
From the fact "Polavaram project is on the Godavari", make:
The Polavaram project, often in the news, is built on which river?
(a) Krishna (b) Godavari (c) Penna (d) Tungabhadra — Answer: (b)
All four are rivers of the region, so you must actually know the fact. Making such questions yourself is the best revision.
Example 5: Filtering out wrong-state news
Headline type: "New metro line opens in Hyderabad." → This is Telangana news, not AP. "Development works in Yanam." → Yanam is part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, even though it is surrounded by AP territory. Do not file either under AP.
Real-world connection
A constable is often the first face of the government at big events. National news in AP shapes police duty directly:
- Cyclones and floods: police help with evacuation, traffic control and relief along the coast.
- Pilgrim crowds: large festivals at Tirumala and other shrines need crowd management.
- VIP and space events: launches, summits and naval events bring national leaders and security planning.
- Schemes: citizens ask the police about central and state schemes; knowing them builds trust.
Reading national news about your own state makes you a better-informed officer, not just a better candidate.
- Mixing up AP and Telangana news. After 2014, Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar belong to Telangana. Hyderabad was only a temporary common capital under the 2014 Act.
- Filing Yanam under AP. Yanam is part of Puducherry UT, though it lies inside AP's territory.
- Trusting forwarded messages. WhatsApp and social-media posts often carry wrong figures. Confirm from PIB or an AP government release.
- Memorising the headline but not the static link. Many questions skip the event detail and ask the related river, ministry or institution.
- Confusing "announced", "foundation stone laid" and "inaugurated". These are three different stages; write the exact stage in your notes.
- Using old district names. AP's districts were reorganised in 2022. Old guides may place towns in the wrong district — check the official AP portal.
- Reading too old or too new only. Items older than 12 months are rarely asked; reading only the last month misses most of the paper.
- Static-link shortcut: If you do not remember the event, answer from the static fact (river, ministry, location). It works for most AP questions.
- Coast filter: For a port, cyclone or naval question, eliminate any option that is not on the coast.
- Ministry filter: City cleanliness → MoHUA; SDG index → NITI Aayog; business reforms → DPIIT.
- Neighbour filter: If an option names a place from Telangana or Puducherry, it is usually a distractor in an AP question.
- Mnemonic: "PRAISE AP" — Projects & Polity, Rankings & Reports, Awards & Achievers, ISRO & Navy, Schemes, Environment & Emergencies. Run every headline through these six boxes.
How it is asked in the exam
Time per question: about 54 seconds on average across the paper. A current-affairs question should take only 15–20 seconds — you either recall it or you guess. Save the extra time for arithmetic and reasoning. There is no negative marking, so never leave a question blank.
Common formats:
| Format | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Direct recall | "Which state's city topped…?" / "In which state is X located?" |
| News + static link | "The space centre in the news is located near which lake?" |
| Match the following | Project → river; index → ministry; place → institution |
| Statement-based | "Which of the statements given above is/are correct?" (1 only / 2 only / both / neither) |
Difficulty levels:
- Easy: Location of a famous institution — Sriharikota, Visakhapatnam naval command, Tirumala.
- Medium: Which ministry released a ranking, which river a project is on, which body names cyclones.
- Hard: A two-statement question mixing the news with a static fact, where one statement has a small error (wrong river, wrong ministry, wrong stage).
Strategy for statement questions: Check each statement separately. One wrong word (Krishna in place of Godavari, NITI Aayog in place of MoHUA) makes the statement false.
- Which source should you check first to confirm a central government announcement about AP?
Answer: The Press Information Bureau (PIB). - A news item says ISRO launched a satellite from Sriharikota. Which state do you tag it under, and what is the centre's name?
Answer: Andhra Pradesh; Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR). - How far back should you track news before your exam?
Answer: 12 months, with extra focus on the latest 6 months. - Is a news item about Yanam "AP news"?
Answer: No. Yanam belongs to the Union Territory of Puducherry. - Which ministry conducts Swachh Survekshan?
Answer: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
- ✓- Track AP-linked national news for the 12 months before the exam; focus most on the last 6 months.
- ✓- Sort news with PRAISE: Projects & Polity, Rankings & Reports, Awards & Achievers, ISRO & Navy, Schemes, Environment & Emergencies.
- ✓- Read PIB and AP government releases first; confirm newspaper or social-media facts.
- ✓- Every note: event + AP link + static link + source; mark ranks and figures "as of
". - ✓- Key static links: Sriharikota (SHAR), Visakhapatnam (Eastern Naval Command), Polavaram (Godavari), Tirumala (TTD).
- ✓- Do not confuse AP with Telangana (Hyderabad) or Puducherry (Yanam).
- ✓- Revise daily, weekly and monthly; make your own MCQs.
