Approximation discipline

- Convert %/decimals to fractions before multiplying.
- Compare fractions by cross-multiplication, never full division.
- Stop at the first digit that separates the two closest options.

DI is a timed calculation sport, and the CAT gives you an on-screen calculator that is slower than mental math for the operations that matter. Toppers barely touch it โ they approximate ruthlessly, because 90% of DI questions ask "which/closest/roughly", where a 2% error changes nothing but exact computation costs 30 seconds you don't have. Speed here is not talent; it's a toolkit of approximation reflexes.
What this tests
Computational efficiency โ approximating, using fraction-to-percentage equivalents, and simplifying before computing, so DI answers come in seconds rather than minutes.
The method
Beginner โ memorise the fraction-percentage table
Convert instantly between common fractions and percentages โ these appear constantly in DI:
- 1/2 = 50%, 1/3 = 33.3%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20%, 1/6 = 16.7%, 1/7 โ 14.3%, 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/9 = 11.1%, 1/11 โ 9.1%, 1/12 โ 8.3%.
So "37 out of 300" โ 37/300 โ 12.3% โ recognising 1/8 = 12.5% tells you it's just under 1/8 without dividing.
Intermediate โ approximate to convenient numbers
Round to easy figures and adjust:
- Percentage change โ (new โ old)/old. To find 616/560, note 560 ร 1.1 = 616 โ exactly 10% increase.
- Multiply by moving decimals: ร10%, ร5% (half of 10%), ร15% (10% + 5%), ร25% (รท4).
- To compare two ratios a/b vs c/d, cross-multiply (aยทd vs cยทb) โ no division at all.
- Round both numerator and denominator the same direction to keep the error small and known.
Advanced โ the FAST CAT approach: answer-choice-aware approximation
- Read the options' spread first. If options are 210 / 340 / 480 / 610 (far apart), approximate hard โ you only need the right ballpark. If they're 340 / 345 / 350 (close), compute more carefully.
- Use anchoring: 10% of a number is a free reference; build 30% = 3ร10%, 45% = 40% + 5%, etc.
- For growth over years, chain approximate factors (1.1 ร 1.2 โ 1.32) instead of computing each year exactly.
- Estimate, then eliminate. Often approximation alone leaves one option standing โ done, no exact math.
Worked example
Question: A firm's revenue grew from โน1,240 crore to โน1,530 crore. The approximate growth is: (a) 18% (b) 23% (c) 28% (d) 33%.
Growth = (1530 โ 1240)/1240 = 290/1240. Approximate: 290/1240 โ 290/1250 = 0.232 = 23%. Even faster: 10% of 1240 = 124; 290/124 โ 2.34, so โ 23%. The options are ~5% apart, so this ballpark cleanly selects (b) with no calculator. Answer: 23%.
CAT relevance
Approximation is the meta-skill of the entire DILR section โ every table, bar, pie, and caselet question rides on fast arithmetic. Two saved minutes across a set is the difference between attempting three sets and four. CAT deliberately spaces answer options so that approximation is the intended solving method.
Speed tricks & shortcuts
- Memorise 1/n percentages up to 1/12 โ instant fraction reading.
- 10% is your anchor โ build every other percentage from it.
- Cross-multiply to compare ratios โ avoid division entirely.
- Read option spread first โ approximate as coarsely as the gaps allow.
- Mnemonic โ "Round, anchor, eliminate." Round to easy numbers, anchor on 10%, eliminate to the surviving option.

Worked Example
Problem: In a DI set you must pick the closest value of 4,850 / 61,300 as a percentage, and also compare two fractions 47/89 vs 61/121 quickly, without long division. Show fast approximation methods.
Solution:
DI is time-pressured, so approximate to the precision the options require rather than computing exactly.
(1) 4,850 / 61,300 as a percentage. Round both to convenient figures:
โ 4,850 / 61,300 โ 4,800 / 60,000 = 48/600 = 0.08 = 8%.
Refine: the numerator was rounded down (4,850 vs 4,800) and denominator down (61,300 vs 60,000). Actual = 4850/61300 โ 0.0791 โ 7.9%. So the answer is about 8% โ close enough to choose among options spaced a few percent apart. The 10%-benchmark trick helps: 10% of 61,300 = 6,130; our numerator 4,850 is a bit under 6,130, so the value is a bit under 10% โ consistent with ~8%.
(2) Compare 47/89 vs 61/121 without dividing fully. Two fast tools:
- Benchmark against 1/2: 47/89 โ half of 89 is 44.5, and 47 > 44.5, so 47/89 > 1/2. For 61/121 โ half of 121 is 60.5, and 61 > 60.5, so 61/121 > 1/2 but only just. So 47/89 clears 1/2 comfortably while 61/121 barely does โ 47/89 is larger.
- Cross-multiplication (exact, still quick): compare 47 ร 121 vs 61 ร 89. 47 ร 121 = 5,687; 61 ร 89 = 5,429. Since 5,687 > 5,429, 47/89 > 61/121. Confirms the benchmark method.
General speed tactics: round to 1โ2 significant figures, use 10%/1%/25%/50% benchmarks, and cross-multiply to compare fractions. Match effort to the answer spacing โ if options differ by ~5%, a 2-significant-figure estimate is enough.
Answer: 4,850/61,300 โ 4,800/60,000 = 8% (exact โ 7.9%). For the fractions, both exceed 1/2 but 47/89 clears it comfortably while 61/121 barely does, so 47/89 is larger โ confirmed by cross-multiplication (47ร121 = 5,687 > 61ร89 = 5,429).
