Indian Art, Culture & Heritage — Revision Notes
Art and culture is a distinctive CUET General Studies zone - classical dances, music, architecture, festivals and UNESCO heritage. It is recall-based; grouping items by state or type makes it manageable.
Classical dance (state pairing)
- Bharatanatyam - Tamil Nadu; Kathak - Uttar Pradesh (north); Kathakali and Mohiniyattam - Kerala; Kuchipudi - Andhra Pradesh; Odissi - Odisha; Manipuri - Manipur; Sattriya - Assam.
Music and architecture
- Two systems: Hindustani (north) and Carnatic (south) classical music.
- Architectural styles: Nagara (north Indian temples), Dravida (south), Vesara (hybrid). Mughal architecture blends Persian and Indian (Taj Mahal, Red Fort).
Heritage and festivals
- UNESCO World Heritage examples in India: Taj Mahal, Ajanta and Ellora caves, Konark Sun Temple, Khajuraho, Hampi.
- Painting: Madhubani (Bihar), Warli (Maharashtra), Pattachitra (Odisha), Tanjore (Tamil Nadu).
Exam Tricks & Tips
- 🎯 Learn dance-to-state pairs as a single table - the highest-frequency culture question.
- 🎯 Split classical music into Hindustani (north) vs Carnatic (south).
- 🎯 Map temple styles: Nagara north, Dravida south, Vesara hybrid.
- 🎯 Tie folk paintings to their states (Madhubani-Bihar, Warli-Maharashtra, Pattachitra-Odisha).
- 🎯 Keep a short UNESCO heritage list (Taj, Ajanta-Ellora, Konark, Hampi, Khajuraho).
- ❌ Common mistake: swapping Kathak (north) and Kathakali (Kerala) - the near-identical names trap many.
Expected exam pattern
Match-the-following (dance-state, painting-state, monument-location) and single-fact recall on styles and festivals. Easy-to-moderate recall.
Quick recap
Memorise dance-state and painting-state tables, Hindustani vs Carnatic music, Nagara/Dravida/Vesara temple styles, and a core UNESCO heritage list. Do not confuse Kathak with Kathakali.

Indian Art, Culture & Heritage
Art and culture questions test familiarity with India's classical traditions — dances, music, architecture, festivals and heritage sites. There is no formula here; the winning strategy is a well-organised map of "which art belongs to which state," reinforced by famous names.
What this tests / core idea: recognising classical dance and music forms, architectural styles, painting schools, and UNESCO/heritage landmarks, and matching each to its region.
Deep explanation
Beginner — classical dances by state
Learn the eight classical dances with their home states:
| Dance | State |
|---|---|
| Bharatanatyam | Tamil Nadu |
| Kathak | Uttar Pradesh (North) |
| Kathakali & Mohiniyattam | Kerala |
| Kuchipudi | Andhra Pradesh |
| Odissi | Odisha |
| Manipuri | Manipur |
| Sattriya | Assam |
Intermediate — music and painting
- Music: Hindustani (North) vs Carnatic (South) classical traditions; instruments — sitar, tabla, veena, sarod.
- Painting schools: Mughal (court miniatures), Rajput/Rajasthani, Pahari, Madhubani (Bihar), Warli (Maharashtra), Tanjore (gold-leaf, Tamil Nadu).
Advanced — architecture and heritage
- Temple styles: Nagara (North), Dravidian (South, gopurams), Vesara (hybrid, Deccan).
- Indo-Islamic: domes, arches, minarets (Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar).
- UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India include Taj Mahal, Ajanta & Ellora Caves, Khajuraho, Hampi, Sun Temple (Konark), and the Sundarbans.
Worked example
Q. Kathakali is a classical dance form of which state?
Recall the dance-state map: Kathakali (and Mohiniyattam) belong to Kerala — the elaborate face make-up and green paint are its signature. Answer: Kerala.
CUET relevance
A regular General Studies culture item: match-the-following (dance ↔ state, painting ↔ region) and single-fact MCQs on heritage sites and festivals. Static and scoreable (3–5 marks).
Speed tricks & shortcuts
- Two Kerala dances: Kathakali & Mohiniyattam (both start with the "Ka/Mo" of Kerala's arts).
- Nagara = North, Dravidian = South (Dravidian → Deep South).
- Group painting schools by region: Madhubani-Bihar, Warli-Maharashtra, Tanjore-Tamil Nadu.
Do not mix up Kathak (North India, UP) with Kathakali (Kerala) — the near-identical names hide opposite ends of the country. Kathak is graceful footwork and spins; Kathakali is dramatic make-up and storytelling.
- ✓- Eight classical dances mapped to their states (Bharatanatyam-TN, Odissi-Odisha…).
- ✓- Hindustani (North) vs Carnatic (South) music.
- ✓- Temple styles: Nagara (North), Dravidian (South), Vesara (Deccan).
- ✓- Know major UNESCO heritage sites (Taj, Ajanta-Ellora, Hampi, Konark).
- ✓Culture questions reward a clean region map. Pin each dance, painting school and temple style to its state or zone, keep Kathak and Kathakali apart, and memorise the headline heritage sites.
Indian Art, Culture & Heritage — Worked Example
Worked Example
Problem: Match each classical dance form or heritage site with its state of origin:
(i) Bharatanatyam, (ii) Kathakali, (iii) Konark Sun Temple, (iv) Khajuraho temples.
Solution:
CUET culture questions test classical arts and UNESCO/heritage sites with their regions.
(i) Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form originating in Tamil Nadu (temple dance tradition; one of the oldest classical dances).
(ii) Kathakali is a classical dance-drama from Kerala, known for elaborate face make-up and costumes, enacting stories from the epics.
(iii) The Konark Sun Temple is in Odisha (13th century, Ganga dynasty, built by Narasimhadeva I), designed as a colossal chariot of the Sun god Surya; a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
(iv) The Khajuraho group of temples is in Madhya Pradesh, built by the Chandela dynasty (10th–11th century), famous for their nagara-style architecture and sculptures; also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For completeness, the eight classical dances and their states: Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kathakali & Mohiniyattam (Kerala), Kathak (North India/Uttar Pradesh), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Odissi (Odisha), Manipuri (Manipur), Sattriya (Assam).
The technique: cluster each art/site with its state and, where relevant, its dynasty and UNESCO status, so match-the-following and "which state" questions become straightforward recall.
Answer: (i) Bharatanatyam → Tamil Nadu; (ii) Kathakali → Kerala; (iii) Konark Sun Temple → Odisha (chariot of Surya, UNESCO site); (iv) Khajuraho temples → Madhya Pradesh (Chandela dynasty, UNESCO site).
- ✓- Classical dances by state: Bharatanatyam (TN), Kathakali/Mohiniyattam (Kerala), Kathak (UP), Kuchipudi (AP), Odissi (Odisha), Manipuri (Manipur), Sattriya (Assam).
- ✓- Konark Sun Temple (Odisha) is shaped as Surya's chariot; a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- ✓- Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh) was built by the Chandelas in nagara style; also a UNESCO site.
