Reading comprehension and verbal reasoning test whether you can extract, infer, and reason from a passage or an argument โ skills that reward a systematic reading strategy over speed. In GATE these carry both 1- and 2-mark items and are entirely doable without outside knowledge; the answer is always in (or logically follows from) the text.
Core concept: RC questions test literal understanding and inference from a passage; verbal reasoning tests logical deduction from statements (assumptions, conclusions, analogies).
The approach
Beginner โ reading comprehension basics
Question types:
- Direct/factual: the answer is stated in the passage โ locate it.
- Inference: the answer is implied, not stated โ it must follow necessarily from the text.
- Main idea/tone: the author's central point or attitude.
- Vocabulary-in-context: a word's meaning as used here.
Strategy: skim for structure, then read the question, then locate the relevant lines โ don't rely on memory or outside facts.
Intermediate โ verbal reasoning types
- Statement-and-conclusion / assumption: decide what necessarily follows or what is taken for granted. A valid conclusion must be fully supported by the statements.
- Analogies: identify the relationship in the given pair (part-whole, cause-effect, degree) and match it. "Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School" (workplace relation).
- Syllogisms: "All A are B; all B are C โ all A are C" โ use Venn diagrams to test validity; beware of "some" and "no" quantifiers.
Advanced โ inference discipline and traps
- Stay within the text: for RC and critical reasoning, never use outside knowledge; the correct inference is entailed by the passage alone.
- Distractor patterns: options that are true in the real world but not supported by the passage; options that are too strong ("always", "never") or too broad; partial truths that miss the question.
- Necessary vs sufficient: an assumption is something the argument needs; a conclusion is what it proves. Distinguish them.
- For strengthen/weaken questions, pick the option that most directly affects the link between evidence and conclusion.
Worked example
Statement: "All engineers in the firm know Python. Some who know Python also know C++." Conclusion: "Some engineers in the firm know C++." Valid?
The second statement says some Python-knowers know C++, but those "some" need not be the firm's engineers. There is no guaranteed overlap between the firm's engineers and the C++ subset.
So the conclusion does not necessarily follow โ it is invalid. A Venn diagram shows the C++ circle may overlap Python outside the engineers' region. This "some" trap is classic.
GATE relevance
1โ2 mark MCQ: factual/inference RC, main idea/tone, syllogisms, assumptions/conclusions, analogies, and strengthen/weaken. The 2-mark reasoning items reward careful logic; RC rewards locating evidence in the text.
Exam tricks and shortcuts
- Answer strictly from the passage/statements โ ignore outside knowledge.

Problem: Read the statements and choose the conclusion that must be true.
"All employees who attended the workshop received a certificate. Ramesh did not receive a certificate. Some employees who received certificates were later promoted."
(A) Ramesh attended the workshop.
(B) Ramesh did not attend the workshop.
(C) Ramesh was promoted.
(D) Every employee who attended was promoted.
Solution:
Translate the first statement into a conditional: "attended the workshop โ received a certificate."
Ramesh did not receive a certificate. Apply the contrapositive of the conditional:
"NOT received a certificate โ NOT attended the workshop."
Therefore Ramesh did not attend the workshop โ option (B) must be true.
Check the others:
- (A) contradicts our deduction. Reject.
- (C) The third statement says only some certificate-holders were promoted; Ramesh has no certificate at all, so nothing forces his promotion. Reject.
- (D) "Some were promoted" never means "all"; this over-generalises. Reject.
Only (B) is a valid, necessary conclusion.
Answer: (B) Ramesh did not attend the workshop.
