Binomial nomenclature
Given by Carolus Linnaeus, every organism has a scientific name in two parts: genus + species (e.g., Mangifera indica = mango, Homo sapiens, Panthera leo). Governed by ICBN (plants) and ICZN (animals).
Universal rules:
- Names are in Latin and written italicised (printed) or underlined separately (handwritten).
- The first word (genus) begins with a capital letter; the second (species) with a small letter.
- The author's name (abbreviated) follows the species name โ e.g., Mangifera indica Linn.
Taxonomy and systematics
Classification groups organisms into convenient categories (taxa). Taxonomy covers characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. Systematics (from Linnaeus's Systema Naturae) studies the diversity of organisms and all their evolutionary relationships.
The taxonomic hierarchy (highest to lowest)
Kingdom โ Phylum (Division in plants) โ Class โ Order โ Family โ Genus โ Species.
Each rank is a taxon. As you move up the hierarchy, the number of shared characteristics decreases.
- Species: the basic unit โ a group of individuals with fundamental similarities that can interbreed (e.g., indica in Mangifera indica).
- Genus: an aggregate of closely related species (Panthera: leo, tigris, pardus; Solanum: nigrum, melongena).
- Family: related genera (dog โ Canidae, cat โ Felidae; Solanum, Petunia, Datura โ Solanaceae).
- Order: aggregate of families (Carnivora = Felidae + Canidae; Polymoniales = Convolvulaceae + Solanaceae).
- Class: related orders (Mammalia = Primata + Carnivora).
- Phylum/Division: related classes (Chordata = Mammalia + Aves + Reptilia + ...).

- Taxonomy: the science of identification, nomenclature and classification of organisms.

The International Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) and International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) lay down universal rules:
- Names are Latin or latinised and written in italics (or underlined separately when handwritten).
- The genus starts with a capital letter; the species epithet is lowercase: Mangifera indica.
- The author's name (abbreviated) appears after the species name in non-italics: Mangifera indica Linn.

Every organism is placed in successive ranks (taxa), from broadest to narrowest:
Kingdom โ Phylum (Division in plants) โ Class โ Order โ Family โ Genus โ Species.
As we descend the hierarchy, the number of shared characters increases and the number of organisms decreases; ascending it, characters shared decrease and organisms grouped increase.
Advanced โ the species and higher categories
- Species: the basic unit of classification โ a group of individuals with fundamental similarities able to interbreed (e.g., sapiens, indica, tigris are species epithets).
- Genus: a group of related species (Panthera includes lion, tiger, leopard; Solanum includes potato S. tuberosum and brinjal S. melongena).
- Family: related genera with more characters in common (e.g., cat and dog families). Plant family names often end in -aceae (Solanaceae), animal families in -idae (Felidae).
- Order, Class, Phylum/Division, Kingdom are progressively larger assemblages defined by fewer shared features.

Human (Homo sapiens) and tiger (Panthera tigris) share the same Kingdom (Animalia), Phylum (Chordata) and Class (Mammalia), then diverge at Order โ human is Primates, tiger is Carnivora. So they share ranks down to Class only.

Binomial nomenclature ends confusion caused by local names โ "mango" alone could mean many trees, but Mangifera indica is unambiguous worldwide. It underpins biodiversity databases, wildlife protection lists (CITES), and drug/plant identification in pharmacology.
