The method
Beginner โ read values onto paper
Note the axis scale (each gridline's value) and read each relevant bar's height. Write the numbers down โ working from a small table of values you extracted is far less error-prone than repeatedly eyeballing bars.
Intermediate โ grouped and stacked bars
- Grouped (clustered) bars: each category has several bars side by side (e.g. two years). Compare within a group or across groups.
- Stacked bars: segments sit on top of each other and the total is the full height; a segment's value is the difference between its top and the segment below. To read the middle segment, subtract the lower boundary from the upper.
Advanced โ comparisons and estimation
- For "percentage increase/decrease", use (new โ old)/old ร 100 on the read values.
- For "which category is highest/lowest", compare bar heights directly โ no computation needed.
- Estimate when a bar falls between gridlines; MCQ options are usually far enough apart that a close read suffices.
Worked example
A grouped bar chart shows sales (units): Product A โ 2022: 300, 2023: 375; Product B โ 2022: 400, 2023: 360. Which product grew, and by what percent?
Product A: (375 โ 300)/300 = 75/300 = +25%. Product B fell (400 โ 360 = โ10%). So A grew by 25%, B declined.
