Inference and Assumption Questions
Inference and assumption questions are the trickiest RC type because the answer is not stated in the passage. You must reason from the text — but only just beyond it, never into speculation.
What this topic tests: drawing valid inferences ("what must follow") and identifying unstated assumptions the author relies on.
The method
Beginner — inference = must be true, not could be
A valid inference is something that must be true given the passage, even if not written. It is a small logical step from the text, not a wild leap. If an option merely could be true, or needs outside facts, it is wrong.
Intermediate — assumption = the missing link
An assumption is an unstated premise the author needs for the argument to hold. Test it with negation: if denying the option breaks the argument, it is a required assumption. "Company X will grow because it hired top engineers" assumes top engineers actually drive that company's growth.
Advanced — staying inside the boundary
- Reject extremes: inference options with "always", "never", "all", "only" usually overreach.
- Reject outside knowledge: correct in reality but unsupported by the passage = wrong.
- Prefer the cautious, minimal step. The examiner rewards the option that stays closest to the text while still going one inch beyond it.
Illustrative passage and technique
"The library extended its hours during exams, and student visits rose sharply. Administrators now plan to keep the longer hours permanently."
Valid inference: the administrators believe longer hours caused (or at least helped) the rise in visits — otherwise they would not extend them. Underlying assumption: the increase was due to the hours, not some other factor (like exams themselves). Negate that assumption — "the rise was only because of exams" — and the plan's logic collapses, confirming it is the assumption.

Speed tricks and shortcuts
- Inference = must be true; eliminate "could be true" and outside-knowledge options.
- Assumption test: negate the option — if the argument fails, it is the assumption.
- Distrust absolute words (all/never/only) in inference options.
- Mnemonic: "Inference is one careful step; assumption is the hidden plank the author stands on."
Over-inferring — choosing an option that goes far beyond the text or relies on real-world facts the passage never gives. A valid inference is a minimal, necessary step, not a plausible-sounding extrapolation.

Worked Example
Problem: Read the passage.
"To cut costs, the city cancelled its late-night bus service. Within months, complaints from hospital night-shift workers rose sharply."
Which is best supported: (I) Many night-shift workers had relied on the late-night buses to commute. (II) The city should restore the service.
Solution: An inference must follow from the stated facts without adding opinion; an assumption is an unstated belief the author takes for granted.
- Statement I — the passage links the cancellation to a rise in complaints from night-shift workers. The most reasonable, evidence-backed inference is that these workers had depended on the buses. This follows directly. Supported (valid inference).
- Statement II — "should restore" is a value judgement/recommendation the passage never makes. It goes beyond the facts. Not supported.
Answer: Only statement I is best supported.
