Flower structure and pre-fertilisation events — revision notes
The flower is the reproductive unit of angiosperms, meant for sexual reproduction. Before gametes can meet, the plant completes a set of pre-fertilisation events: the development of the male and female reproductive structures and the formation of gametes.
The flower as a reproductive structure
A typical flower has four whorls — calyx (sepals), corolla (petals), androecium (stamens, the male part) and gynoecium/pistil (the female part). The androecium and gynoecium are the essential reproductive whorls. A stamen has a filament and an anther; the pistil has stigma, style and ovary.
Pre-fertilisation events
Two major events precede fertilisation:
- Gametogenesis — formation of male gametes inside the anther (microsporogenesis → pollen) and of the female gamete inside the ovule (megasporogenesis → embryo sac).
- Pollination — transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma, bringing the two gametes close enough to fuse.
Flowers may be bisexual (both whorls) or unisexual (staminate or pistillate).

Flower structure and pre-fertilisation events
A flower is not decoration — it is a plant's reproductive machine, engineered by evolution to bring a male and female gamete together. Everything from petal colour to nectar exists to make fertilisation happen.
Core idea: The flower is the site of sexual reproduction in angiosperms. Before fertilisation, two parallel events must occur — the development of the male gametophyte (in the anther) and the female gametophyte (in the ovule). These are the pre-fertilisation events.
Structure of the flower
A typical flower has four whorls attached to the swollen tip of the pedicel (thalamus):
Non-essential (accessory) whorls
- Calyx — sepals, usually green, protect the bud.
- Corolla — petals, often coloured/scented to attract pollinators.
Essential (reproductive) whorls
- Androecium — the male part, made of stamens. Each stamen = a filament + an anther (which produces pollen).
- Gynoecium (pistil) — the female part. Each carpel has three regions: the stigma (receives pollen), the style (a stalk), and the ovary (contains ovules).
A flower with all four whorls is complete; one with both androecium and gynoecium is bisexual (e.g. Hibiscus). Unisexual flowers bear only one (e.g. papaya, cucurbits).
Pre-fertilisation events
Two structural developments precede fertilisation:
- Microsporogenesis in the anther → pollen grains (male gametophyte).
- Megasporogenesis in the ovule → embryo sac (female gametophyte).
These are followed by pollination (transfer of pollen to stigma), which sets the stage for fertilisation.
Worked example
Q: A flower has sepals, petals and stamens but no carpels. Classify it.
A: Because it lacks the gynoecium it is incomplete and, having only the androecium, it is a unisexual (staminate/male) flower. It can donate pollen but cannot form seeds itself.
Real-world / exam application
Understanding whorls explains crop breeding: to make controlled crosses, breeders emasculate (remove anthers from) a bisexual flower before its pollen matures, then bag it — directly using the androecium/gynoecium distinction.
