INFRASTRUCTURE TERMS:

  • Track: the rails on which train runs.

  • Sleeper: the horizontal beams (now usually concrete; earlier wood).

  • Ballast: the crushed stones supporting sleepers.

  • Gauge: distance between two rails.

    • Broad Gauge (BG): 1676 mm — Indian standard.
    • Metre Gauge (MG): 1000 mm — mostly converted.
    • Narrow Gauge (NG): 762/610 mm — only mountain railways.
  • OHE (Overhead Equipment): wire above tracks supplying 25 kV AC.

  • Catenary: the suspended OHE wire system.

  • Pantograph: the device on top of electric loco contacting OHE.

  • Signal: indicates whether train can proceed.

  • Token: old physical authority for single-line working (now replaced by token-less).

  • Block: section of track between two signals.

  • Loop line: secondary track at stations for crossing/overtaking.

  • Yard: area for marshalling/parking trains.

  • Carriage Shed: maintenance facility for coaches.

  • Loco Shed: maintenance for locomotives.


TRAIN TYPES (terminology):

  • Mail/Express: standard inter-city trains.
  • Superfast Express: higher average speed (55+ km/h).
  • Passenger / Local: slow, all stops.
  • Suburban: in metropolitan areas (EMU/MEMU).
  • EMU: Electric Multiple Unit — self-propelled local.
  • MEMU: Mainline EMU — longer-distance local.
  • DEMU: Diesel EMU — for non-electrified routes.
  • Tourist train: luxury / special itinerary (Maharajas, Palace on Wheels).

OPERATIONAL CONCEPTS:

  • Coaching stock: passenger coaches/coaches incl. parcel vans.
  • Goods stock: wagons.
  • Rake: a rake = set of coaches forming a train. Usually 22-24 coaches.
  • Composition: the number/type of coaches in a rake.
  • Halt: small station with limited services.
  • Junction: station where 3+ routes meet.
  • Terminus: end of line (e.g., CSMT, HWH).

TIME TABLE TERMS:

  • ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival.
  • ETD: Estimated Time of Departure.
  • NTES: real-time updates.
  • Daily, Weekly, Bi-weekly: frequency.
  • Permanent, Special: running status.

PRICING TERMS:

  • Base fare: fixed per km.
  • Reservation charge: booking fee.
  • Tatkal charge: premium for last-minute.
  • Superfast surcharge: for superfast trains.
  • Dynamic pricing: demand-based (rare; for some Rajdhani/Tejas).
  • Cancellation charge: depends on time before departure.

SAFETY / SIGNALLING:

  • ATP (Automatic Train Protection): prevents train passing red signal.
  • KAVACH: indigenous ATP system (developed by RDSO).
  • TCAS: Train Collision Avoidance System (older name for KAVACH).
  • ABS (Automatic Block Signaling).
  • MACLS (Modified Automatic Centralized Lighting Signaling).
  • CTC (Centralized Traffic Control).
  • TPWS (Train Protection Warning System).

EXAM HOOKS:

  • PNR is unique 10-digit booking reference.
  • RAC vs WL: RAC = part-confirmed (you'll get a seat); WL = waitlisted.
  • OHE = 25 kV AC for traction.
  • KAVACH = indigenous ATP system; replacing TCAS.
  • Pantograph: device on loco roof for current pickup.
  • Gauge: BG (1676 mm) is standard; almost all Indian rail is BG now.
  • TTE/TT: ticket examiner on trains.
  • NTES: free train info via app/website.
